Packing and environment

Packing, preserving during certain time the property and quality of products, drinks, goods, in the end turns out to be waste. In many countries this problem finds its decision. However, packaging waste is the visible problem. There is also harmful influence of packaging materials and production processes of their manufacturing on the environment. However finally packing rather protects the environment than pollutes it. At that, many factors play an important role: a technological level and the equipment, packaging materials consumption, social problems, training and education of the population. One should have legislative acts for regulating the «relations» of packaging with the environment, which should be based on results of research of packing influence on the environment. Then all the society, including the manufacturer of packing, his consumer and buyer, will be responsible for the decision of this problem as a whole.

The credit of Eurobank. Myth or reality?

Within last several years a number of the Ukrainian enterprises of the packaging industry aimed at prospects of the further development, have taken advantage of the opportunity presented to them to obtain the credit in the European Reconstruction and Development Bank (EBRD). “The first signs” were a long-term credit for the sum $ 12 million, granted to the Gostomel glass package producing plant by the European Reconstruction and Development Bank. It became known, that the European Reconstruction and Development Bank would grant a loan at a rate of $ 14 million to Rubezhan paperboard-tare combine (РКТК) in December 2003. The total cost of the project of reconstruction PKTK, including investments from different sources, makes $ 44 million. The funds will be directed on modernization and expansion of existing manufacture of a cardboard and corrugated cardboard, on development of new manufacture “Tripolye packaging factory” (town Ukrainka of the Kiev region), improvement of wastepaper collection system, foundation of energy generating capacities with the use of process steam of the enterprise and so forth. Thus, the Ukrainian enterprises working in the packaging industry, successfully developing own manufacture, may apply for cooperation with the European Reconstruction and Development Bank.

Materials

Influence of packaging materials on the shelf life of unglazed cream

The cream glazed by the chocolate and confectionery cream are presented in the wide range at the Ukrainian market. Much lower part is presented by the unglazed cream. It is explained by the property of the pomade mass to loose the moisture quickly. For the prevention of quick hardening of unglazed cream there are two ways: usage of additional raw materials, additions which would drag quick moisture removal from the cream shell; application of packing materials which would be used as the barrier for the moisture removal from the cream shell as well protect the products from the environment factors, improve the appearance of goods, create conveniences during the transporting and storage. The results of research of the influence of different packing materials to the «hardening» process of the unglazed cream are given at the article.

Glues for production of paper/cardboard products

Modern glues used in the procedures of processing and recycling of paper/cardboard goods are highly various in their properties, preparation condition and application. According to the origin they are divided into the natural and synthetic. Most of synthetic sizing compounds are ecologically harmful, little practically feasible in preparation and application in production. That’s why in recent years in world practice of paper/cardboard goods production different types of starch are widely used. Technological peculiarities of starch glues application and their classification depending on the usage are stated at the article.

Packing of large dimension goods

Dynamic development of building sector assists intensive development of products packaging from this branch. One of the widely used products is foamed polystyrene plates. As a rule, the pack with further wrapping around into the polyethylene film is formed from such plates. The results of optimization of the operating practices of film welding and constructive decision of the plant for packaging the foamed polystyrene plates into the polyethylene film are given in this article.

The equipment

Viscous foodstuffs batching by the piston type butchers

The approach to the analysis of the piston type batching devices for the viscous products, which is carried out during the creation of new or modernization of existing models of the packaging equipment, is viewed in this article. The mathematical simulation, which is based upon the methods of the finite elements, is applied for analysis of the movable operating element move and viscous product at the working chamber of the batcher. The results of conducted researches allowed the working out of recommendations to the developers in the choice of rational schemes and parameters of the viscous products batching devices.

How to pack paper rolls?

In the year 2002 management of Kiev paperboard plant proposed the enterprise «Pastprom» to build up the line for the paper rolls packaging of sanitary purpose. The constructed line LTU-2-4200, which was put in commission in 2002, accomplished engineering procedure of packaging. The line consists wholly of domestic materials and componentry, and organizations using only their own developments participated in its construction. At the automated line, the packaging of paper rolls is carried out into stretch film. Whipping of reels by stretch film is carried out by two types of winding - axial and tangential. Line speed is 25 packs per hour.

The exhibitions carried out in 2003 have clearly shown, that in the Ukrainian food and packaging industries as against the last years, the demand for technologically modern and complex automated packing equipment of high efficiency has appeared. In Ukraine, there is a practice as purchasing of the newest packing equipment, as second-hand machines of Western type. There are no exact statistical data about manufacture of packaging machines in Ukraine. According to the estimate of Packagers Club of Ukraine, there are more than 150 enterprises in the country, which produce packaging machines. In most cases, these enterprises produce packaging equipment for the enterprises of small and average productivity. And in this segment the Ukrainian engineering workers have the most favorable chances for the development. Despite of the achieved essential results in the packaging industry, in Ukraine one should understand, that there is still a long way of perfection ahead, including in the sphere of packaging mechanical engineering.

The article reviews the situation with the manufacture of big-volume containers made of polyethylene. Harmony of shape and content

Packaging of perfumery-cosmetic means has a long history. Its development is connected directly with the assortment of these means. With the appearance of polymer materials, the real boom has occurred in the packing for cosmetics. Unfortunately, the selection of package becomes quite a problem for Ukrainian producers of cosmetics. As a rule, it has to be imported from other countries. Enterprises of Byelorussia, Russia and far foreign countries supply to Ukraine flasks, tubes, bottles for shampoos, creams and other means.

Packing for home appliances

Today in private life, the various home appliances are very widely applied. However, a few think over its packing. At the same time, packing for home appliances should meet the certain requirements. They are determined, first of all, by such engineering properties as fragility, significant weight. And if appearance of packing in this case has no crucial importance, then stability of packing to vibration, impacts at fall, to static loads at storage and transportation of home appliances are very important requirements for packing. Factors which have influence on development of packing for various kinds are given, the priority for the designer and engineer is specified. The multi- component of packing for home appliances is shown, the characteristic for separate parts of packing is given, and used materials are specified.

Packaging for flowers (problems and proposals)

Flower industry increases and spreads in sight every day. That’s why solving of the question of their transportation, storage is impossible without the selection of corresponding packing. At the same time, packing is required to unite a complete bouquet of esthetic demands in it - making flower present more harmonious, beautiful and richer. Examples of solving the problems of flowers packaging by the young specialists of M. Boychuk KDIDPMD are given at the article. Creative imagination at the developments of young specialists, which is directed at the corresponding course, is able to turn quite ordinary newspaper into the exclusive packing.

The results of researches of the wear-resistance of metallic and photopolymer printing plates for the die stamping are given at the work and it is indicated the wear-resistance of the metallic printing plates in 40-50 times exceed this index of the photopolymer printing plates.

Packaging in Poland

The begun 2004 year will be very important for Poland as the year of the joining the European Union. On a background of not very convincing economic development of a national economy in the country, the Polish packing industry shows stable rates of growth (in 5-6 % in quantity of packing and in 13 % in its cost annually). The significant part in such achievements is played by the Centre of research and development of packing (COBRO), which gives the basic attention to the education projects, researches, the international cooperation with the European research centres. Especially important is the revival since the 2002 year carrying out of national competition for the best packing Pak Star, one of the winners of which has also received World Star Award.

Ecology

Recycling of contqiner from PET (experience from Alexandria)

Joint-stock company «Obolon» established the regional branch in Kirovograd region in 1996. Besides the finished commodities selling of JSC «Obolon», the production sectors are opened at the branch, where the manufacture of polymer boxes for glass bottles is carried out. Furthermore, in the year 2002, in the light of implementation of the Cabinet of Ministers decree № 915, the processing line in treatment of used PET bottles is assembled and put into production. The peculiarity of this line is that it processes not only a «clear» bottle, but the «ground» one. Refined and grinded raw materials are mainly transported abroad for further processing.

Consumer and packaging waste

We are consumers, who use goods and consume foods and drinks and turn the packaging into waste. The effectiveness of the work of waste management system depends exactly on us, on what everyone would do with the used packaging. That’s why the information, training, agitation work with population takes on special significance. The data about the regulations are cited, at which the successfully working waste management systems of used packaging are built. The time of running experiments on the separate collection of used packaging has come. The events of informational, technical, organizational and financial providing with such experiments are given.

Certification of a quality control system of the machine-building factory

Expansion of a finished products market as in Ukraine, as in near and far foreign countries demands guaranteed quality on a product from the manufacturer. One of schemes of the repeated control over the quality of manufacture is the certification of a quality control system. For today, many leading firms and enterprises in different branches of a national economy already have such certificate. It is little bit more difficult to solve this task for the machine-building enterprises, particularly dealing with creation of the packaging equipment. However, the aspiration of the enterprises to be up-to-date of the global standards requires of them the solution of this rather complicated task. In the article the information on stages of certification of the «Plant «Thermo-Pack» Ltd. by a quality control system of is given. The certificate of the TNO - Netherlands organization of scientific - applied arts is accepted in the basis of certification.

Graphic design of the Soviet packing in 1930-th years

Graphic decoration of packing may tell very much about life of a society, its culture, politics, social structure and spiritual sphere, about needs and problems of consumers. Packing is the "document" fixing features of development of a society at a concrete stage. One of the uneasy, variable stages of development of the USSR was the period of 1930-th, when industrialization and collectivization changed the life-style and way of life of people, brought them out on a new qualitative level. The traditional stylistics of packing in this period was represented by decisions in the style modern Аr Deco, in constructivist and "commercial" traditions, in a "national" style key.
